There IS a Right Way to Hang Toilet Paper!

Turns out that after decades of domestic dispute, one of the great mysteries of the universe has been solved… There IS a correct way to hang that roll of toilet paper! And before you go bothering everyone with your ol’ opinion, please bear in mind that we have SCIENCE on our side!!

A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado, reported via Inc, has determined that we can all stop arguing.

According to science, the correct way to hang toilet paper is “over.” Why? Because “under” vastly increases the possibility that food-poisoning bacteria will spread from the restroom to the rest of the workplace.

You may be wondering what food poisoning has to do with toilet paper. We can answer that in two words.

Toilet plumes.

Much of bacteria found in public restrooms is e. coli from human feces, a common source of food poisoning. E-coli is easily transferred from surfaces to your fingers and thence to anything that you eat with your hands.

To put it bluntly, the “bioaerosols” in toilet plumes contain fecal matter, which is deposited over most bathroom surfaces with every flush. From the counters to the sinks, from the floor to the wall behind your toilet paper. By hanging the paper “under” rather than “over”, you increase the likelihood of your hand brushing the wall when you reach for a sheet. Your hand… and everyone else’s.

Once bacteria is on your hand, it’s damned difficult to remove. The way most people wash their hands–a couple of seconds with a dab of soap–is useless. To get your hands thoroughly clean, you must scrub with lather for at least 20 seconds…

So, please. In the interest of good health, stop arguing with your spouse and just fix the roll. We’re going to.

And then we’re going to sing Happy Birthday. Maybe four or five times, just to be sure.
